A key leader of the New People’s Army (NPA) has surrendered in Lope de Vega, Northern Samar, following intensified focused military operations, the Philippine Army’s 8th Infantry Division (8ID) reported Wednesday.
The military withheld his identity but said he was the vice leader of Squad 3, Regional Security Force of the NPA’s Eastern Visayas Regional Party Committee (EVRPC).
After surrendering Tuesday, the rebel disclosed the location of a buried arms cache in San Isidro village, Matuguinao, Samar. Troops recovered an M16 rifle, a .45-caliber pistol, and two magazines for the pistol.
Maj. Gen. Adonis Ariel Orio, 8ID commander, praised the rebel’s cooperation, saying it proves the military’s comprehensive approach and strong local partnerships are weakening the EVRPC’s operational capabilities.
He urged remaining rebels to abandon the armed struggle and reunite with their families, stressing that government programs like the Enhanced Local Integration Program can help them rebuild their lives and support peace and development in Northern Samar.
