The House Committee on Justice may speed up proceedings on the impeachment complaints against Vice President Sara Duterte if she fails to submit her response by Monday, Bicol Saro Representative Terry Ridon said.
Duterte and her camp have until the end of office hours on Monday to file their answer to the complaints.
“The House Committee on Justice is awaiting the vice president’s answer… In the event that she does not respond by Monday, the process will be shortened, abbreviated,” Ridon said during a forum on Saturday.
He said the panel could move quickly toward determining the sufficiency of grounds and proceed to formal hearings before the end of the month if no response is submitted.
The complaints against Duterte were earlier deemed sufficient in form and substance by the committee.
If the vice president files a reply, the complainants will have three days to submit their response, after which Duterte may file a rejoinder within another three days.
Ridon said the justice panel is tentatively set to determine the sufficiency of grounds for impeachment on April 8.
The impeachment complaints stem from allegations of misuse of confidential funds in the Office of the Vice President and the Department of Education, as well as accusations that Duterte threatened to hire a hitman against President Ferdinand Marcos, First Lady Liza Araneta Marcos, and Leyte Representative Martin Romualdez, along with claims of irregular procurement and bribery in the education department.
