NHCP allocates P40M to restore Sta. Monica Church in Ilocos Norte

The National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP) has allocated some PHP40 million for the initial restoration of the historic Sta. Monica Church, a popular wedding venue here damaged by a strong earthquake in 2024.

Fr. Ericson Josue, parish priest, on Tuesday said a memorandum of agreement has been signed between NHCP and the Roman Catholic Church represented by Bishop Renato Mayugba for the first phase of the restoration of the heritage church, which was declared an important cultural property in 2009.

“This marks an important event of our church, the memorandum of agreement signing for the restoration Phase 1 of the Sta. Monica Church,” Josue said, adding restoration work will start in September.

The first phase of the restoration covers the roof, truss work, and strengthening of the brick walls.

Over the past two years, strong earthquakes, including the one in December last year, have weakened the two-century-old Sta. Monica Church, prompting its closure from liturgical activities for the safety of churchgoers.

Established in 1724 by Augustinian friars, the parish has been a significant factor in shaping the spiritual life and culture of the people of Sarrat, also known as the birthplace of the late President Ferdinand E. Marcos Sr., father of incumbent President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.

The Sarrat Church was also the venue of the wedding of presidential sister Irene Marcos-Araneta in June 1983.
