Inflation in Negros Oriental accelerated in March 2026, driven mainly by higher transport costs and tight corn supply, according to the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA).
PSA-Negros Oriental said the rate for all income households reached 3.0 percent, up from 1.8 percent in February and reversing last year’s negative reading for the same period.
Officials said transport posted the highest contribution to the increase, followed by food and non-alcoholic beverages and restaurants and accommodation services.
Fortuito said transport remained the main driver of the uptick, accounting for most of the upward movement in prices, while food-related items and dining services also added pressure.
The PSA linked the transport surge to higher fuel prices influenced by global tensions, which have affected local consumer costs.
Corn prices also pushed inflation higher after supply tightened due to land conversion, weather disruptions, and a declining number of farmers in the province.
Officials warned that inflationary pressures may persist in the coming months if global and local supply conditions remain constrained.
