The death toll from Super Typhoon Uwan has climbed to six, with nearly 1.5 million people displaced across the Philippines, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) reported Tuesday.
The latest figures released in the agency’s 6 a.m. update confirmed six fatalities. Three deaths were reported in Cagayan Valley, and one each in the Bicol, Western Visayas, and Eastern Visayas regions.
In addition to the deaths, 13 injuries have been reported, though only one has been officially validated.
The typhoon, which reached Super Typhoon category, has caused extensive damage, with the NDRRMC recording 4,143 damaged houses across Regions 1, 5, 6, 8, 9, CARAGA, and the BARMM.
The massive scale of the disaster prompted the evacuation of 445,967 families, affecting a total of 1,490,759 individuals.
The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) reported that Uwan is now outside the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR). The weather bureau forecasts the typhoon will follow a recurving path, turning northward and then northeastward.
PAGASA cautioned that Uwan may re-enter PAR briefly on Wednesday evening as it makes landfall over the southwestern coast of Taiwan, which is expected to result in further weakening.
