The National Bureau of Investigation(NBI) said it is verifying claims that former lawmaker Mike Defensor allegedly gave Php 5 million each to members linked to the so-called “18 ex-Marines” in connection with testimonies in the flood control controversy.
NBI Director Melvin Matibag disclosed the development in a press briefing, saying the information came from a relative of one of the individuals involved.
Matibag said the tip pointed to alleged payments tied to statements made by the group, who earlier identified themselves as “bagmen” for former Ako Bicol Rep. Elizaldy Co.
He said the bureau has already issued a subpoena against Defensor, requiring him to explain the allegation before investigators.
Defensor has yet to respond to the accusation, and the Daily Chronicle has likewise sought his comment but had not received any reply as of posting time.
The individuals tagged as the “18 ex-Marines” are currently at the Senate after being invited to attend the blue ribbon committee hearings on the flood control issue.
They had earlier appeared before the NBI as part of its separate investigation into their statements and involvement in the controversy.
Their lawyer, Atty. Levito Baligod, earlier presented them as former Marines who allegedly acted as “bagmen” in transactions linked to flood control projects, claims that have fueled competing narratives now under government scrutiny.
