The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) has taken into custody social media personality Franco Mabanta over an alleged extortion attempt involving former Speaker and Leyte Rep. Martin Romualdez.
NBI Director Melvin Matibag confirmed the arrest in a message to reporters on Wednesday.
Authorities said Mabanta is known for establishing Peanut Gallery Media Network (PGMN), a platform that produces political commentary content, particularly on YouTube.
According to reports, the arrest was made in Valle Verde Country Club in Pasig City on Tuesday night.
He said more information would be released during a scheduled media briefing set for 11 a.m.
The case stemmed from allegations that Mabanta attempted to extort money from Romualdez, although specifics of the complaint have yet to be publicly outlined.
Investigators are expected to present initial findings and clarify the circumstances surrounding the arrest during the briefing.
The NBI has yet to say whether other individuals were involved or if additional charges will be filed as the investigation progresses.
