Former broadcaster Jay Sonza was taken into custody by the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) on Thursday evening in Quezon City in connection with a cyberlibel case.
The arrest was carried out after a warrant was issued by a Regional Trial Court in Pasay City, according to NBI Director Melvin Matibag.
Authorities said the case stemmed from allegations that Sonza circulated falsified medical records attributed to President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.
Matibag confirmed that the arrest was implemented shortly after the warrant was released, and that Sonza was immediately placed under NBI custody.
The complaint was filed earlier this year, with investigators linking Sonza and another content creator to the alleged dissemination of misleading information.
The NBI said the case forms part of its efforts to address the spread of false and harmful online content.
Following the arrest, Sonza’s lawyer said he would personally go to the NBI to ensure that his client’s rights are observed, noting his status as a senior citizen.
He added that they would closely monitor developments in the case and take appropriate legal steps if necessary.
