LOS ANGELES — Once hailed as one of basketball’s most clutch performers, Paul Pierce’s post-retirement life took another troubling turn this week after the former Boston Celtics star was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence in Los Angeles.
According to the California Highway Patrol, officers discovered the 10-time NBA All-Star asleep inside his black Range Rover on U.S. Highway 101 late Tuesday night. The vehicle was stopped in the middle of the road—its engine still running—just south of a separate multi-vehicle crash that had closed several lanes earlier in the evening.
When officers woke Pierce around 10:40 p.m., they reportedly observed “signs of alcohol impairment.” A roadside sobriety test followed, leading to his arrest on a misdemeanor DUI charge. The case will be reviewed by the Los Angeles City Attorney’s Office.
Pierce, who was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2021, has not released a public statement as of press time.
Pierce’s career was once defined by leadership and resilience. Known as The Truth—a nickname given to him by Shaquille O’Neal—the 6’7” forward spent 15 seasons with the Boston Celtics, earning an NBA title and Finals MVP honors in 2008. He later suited up for the Brooklyn Nets, Washington Wizards, and Los Angeles Clippers before retiring in 2017.
But since hanging up his jersey, the Hall of Famer’s image has taken a hit. In 2021, ESPN cut ties with him after a viral video showed him partying with exotic dancers on Instagram Live. More recently, he was fined $1.4 million by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission for promoting cryptocurrency investments without proper disclosure.
Pierce had briefly resurfaced in sports media as a cohost on Fox Sports’ Speak, but the show was quietly canceled in July 2025.
For many fans, the arrest serves as another reminder of how quickly the glow of stardom can fade. Once the face of Celtics basketball and a symbol of perseverance after surviving a near-fatal stabbing in 2000, Pierce’s recent controversies mark a sharp contrast to the disciplined image he cultivated during his playing years.
