The ongoing saga between Myles Garrett and the Cleveland Browns has taken another turn. After publicly requesting a trade earlier this month, the star defensive end has reportedly rejected a contract extension from the team, according to multiple sources.
Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com reported that Garrett’s representatives have completely shut down discussions on a potential new deal, making it clear that his desire to leave Cleveland is not financially motivated. ESPN has also confirmed that Garrett has no interest in negotiating a long-term future with the Browns.
Garrett, 29, has been a cornerstone of the Browns’ defense since being selected first overall in the 2017 NFL Draft. However, frustration over the team’s direction has led to his trade demand. In early February, Garrett stated that his goal is to compete for a Super Bowl and that he does not want to settle into complacency.
Despite his request, the Browns have maintained their stance on keeping their six-time Pro Bowler. General manager Andrew Berry reiterated this position on Tuesday, telling reporters that the organization has “no interest” in moving Garrett, echoing similar comments made before last month’s Pro Bowl.
By rejecting a contract extension, Garrett is making it clear that his dissatisfaction with the Browns is not about money—he genuinely wants a fresh start elsewhere. The All-Pro pass rusher is currently under contract through the 2026 season after signing a five-year, $125 million extension in 2020, but he has expressed concerns about being part of another potential rebuilding phase in Cleveland.
If the Browns ultimately decide to honor Garrett’s trade request, he will be one of the most sought-after players on the market. The reigning Defensive Player of the Year continues to be a dominant force, having just completed a stellar season with 14 sacks and a career-high 40 solo tackles.
