The basketball world is still digesting the blockbuster trade that sent Anthony Davis to the Dallas Mavericks in exchange for Luka Dončić. But while the discussion rages on, Davis is choosing to focus on the future rather than dwell on the past.
In an exclusive conversation with the Los Angeles Times following Tuesday night’s emotional showdown between the Lakers and Mavericks, Davis reflected on the trade and his mindset moving forward. The game marked the first meeting between the two teams since the high-profile swap.
While Dončić made a statement on the court with a dazzling triple-double in the Lakers’ 107-99 victory, Davis could only watch from the bench, sidelined with an adductor injury. Before tipoff, the Lakers honored Davis with a heartfelt tribute video, recognizing his contributions to the franchise.
“It was definitely a special moment,” Davis said. “If I had been out there playing, I think it would have hit me even harder emotionally. But I really appreciate the Lakers for doing that—it means a lot to me.”
Despite the sudden shift in his career, Davis took a pragmatic approach to the trade. He acknowledged the unpredictable nature of the business and quickly came to terms with the move. Still, he admitted that some aspects of how things unfolded remain unclear to him.
“The front office has to make decisions, and they’re always going to do what they think is best for the organization,” Davis explained. “But do I feel like I ever got the full story? Not really. A lot of people say they didn’t know, that it happened fast. I just don’t buy it.”
Regardless of the circumstances, Davis is fully embracing his new chapter in Dallas.
“They made their choice. They wanted their guy, and that’s what they did,” he said. “Whether it was something they had to do or just something they wanted to do, that’s not my concern anymore. My focus is on my family, getting them settled in Dallas, and making sure we adjust to this new life. It’s done. I’m all in on what we’re building here.”
Before the game, Mavericks fans outside the arena voiced their frustrations over the trade and the decision-making of general manager Nico Harrison. However, the atmosphere inside was far more welcoming. When Davis was introduced in the starting lineup, the crowd erupted in a standing ovation—a clear sign that Mavericks fans are ready to rally behind their new star.
“I just want to be someone they can count on,” Davis said. “I know they lost a player they loved, and that’s tough. But my goal is to show them that I’m here to help this team win and give them something to believe in.”
Though his injury limited his minutes early on, Davis remains optimistic about the Mavericks’ potential.
“I think fans have seen glimpses of what we can be when we’re at full strength,” he added. “Unfortunately, I had this setback, but when I’m back on the court, we’re going to show why this move was made. I want to prove to everyone that we can be great.”
For now, Davis remains focused on recovery and helping the Mavericks make a serious push in the Western Conference. The trade may still be fresh, but he’s already looking ahead—ready to make his mark in Dallas.
