Commuters using the Metro Rail Transit Line 3 (MRT-3) will be able to ride for free during select hours on Tuesday, December 30, in observance of Rizal Day.
The Department of Transportation (DOTr) announced that the “Libreng Sakay” program will be available for a total of four hours to honor the 128th anniversary of the martyrdom of the national hero, Dr. Jose Rizal.
According to the DOTr advisory, fares will be waived during the following peak periods: 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.
The initiative aims to ease the burden on commuters while commemorating Rizal’s heroism and contributions to the country.
“By means of our free ride initiative, the MRT-3 aims to convey the line’s solidarity in honoring the heroism of Gat Jose Rizal,” the
rail management said in a statement.
Regular operations will continue outside of the free ride hours. The first train is scheduled to depart from North Avenue Station at 4:30 a.m. and from Taft Avenue Station at 5:05 a.m.
The last trips are set for 9:30 p.m. from North Avenue and 10:09 p.m. from Taft Avenue.
Rizal Day is a regular national holiday in the Philippines, marking the date in 1896 when Rizal was executed at Bagumbayan, now known as Rizal Park.
Other rail lines, including the LRT-2, are expected to implement similar free ride schedules for the holiday.
