Japan revised its assessment of relations with China in its latest Diplomatic Bluebook, reflecting growing tensions between Tokyo and Beijing.
The 2026 report, approved at a cabinet meeting, described China as an important neighboring country, a shift from the previous year’s wording that characterized ties as among the most significant bilateral relationships.
Officials said the change followed a series of developments that strained relations, including remarks by Japan Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi regarding a possible Taiwan contingency.
The report cited what it described as increasing pressure and criticism from Beijing, pointing to actions that raised concerns in Tokyo.
Among these were statements by Chinese Consul General in Osaka Xue Jian, as well as military activities involving Chinese aircraft and trade related restrictions affecting Japanese goods.
Despite the shift in tone, the document stated that Japan remained open to maintaining communication and dialogue with China.
The report underscored the challenges facing Japan China relations while signaling continued efforts to manage differences through diplomatic channels.
