Motorists brace for first oil price hike of 2025

The Department of Energy (DOE) announced that motorists will face higher fuel costs as the first oil price hike of 2025 takes effect next week.

The DOE has released the expected increases for various petroleum products:

  • Gasoline: ₱0.90 to ₱1.10 per liter increase
  • Diesel: ₱1.30 to ₱1.50 per liter increase
  • Kerosene: ₱0.90 to ₱1.10 per liter increase

The official price adjustments will be announced on Monday, January 6, and implemented the following day, Tuesday, January 7.

Factors behind the price hike
This adjustment follows slight price cuts implemented on December 31, 2024. The DOE cited several factors driving the increase:

  1. Seasonal Demand for Heating Fuels
    • The cold weather in the United States and Europe has led to heightened demand for heating fuels, pushing up global oil prices.
  2. OPEC Production Cuts
    • The Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) has extended its production cuts until April 2025, tightening global supply and contributing to the price uptick.
  3. Geopolitical Tensions
    • Ongoing geopolitical issues fuel short-term volatility in oil prices, further influencing the upward trend.

Impact on consumers
The looming price hike is expected to increase transportation and operational costs, particularly for businesses reliant on fuel-powered logistics. Public utility vehicle operators and private motorists are advised to prepare for higher expenses.

The DOE continues to monitor global oil market trends and assures the public of efforts to mitigate the impact of price fluctuations. Motorists are encouraged to practice fuel efficiency and plan their trips accordingly as the adjustments take effect.
