More than 70,000 cops deployed to secure ‘Simbang Gabi’ nationwide

The Philippine National Police has placed all its units on heightened alert across the nation in anticipation of the start of “Simbang Gabi,” the traditional series of dawn and evening Masses leading up to Christmas, which begins on December 16.

Millions of Catholic faithful are expected to participate in these religious services. Under the operation dubbed “Ligtas Paskuhan 2025,” the PNP is deploying more than 70,000 police personnel to churches and other high-traffic areas to guarantee the safety and security of attendees.

PNP acting chief Lt. Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. released a statement detailing the enhanced security protocols.

These measures include intensified foot patrols, checkpoints, and mobile patrols, along with close coordination with local government units, barangay officials, and church authorities for effective crowd control and emergency response.

Commanders across the nation have been specifically directed to secure places of worship and surrounding convergence areas, particularly spots frequented by churchgoers after the services.

“Our goal is for our countrymen to feel safe as they attend Simbang Gabi and return home,” Nartatez stated, emphasizing the commitment to making the Christmas season meaningful through improved peace and order.

Officers will maintain vigilance against common holiday crimes such as theft and pickpocketing, as well as traffic congestion, fire hazards, and other potential emergencies, with a visible deployment around churches and adjacent streets.

The police chief also urged the public to remain alert, secure their personal belongings, adhere to traffic regulations, and immediately report any suspicious activities.

In a localized effort, the Police Regional Office 3 has already activated its holiday security operations throughout Central Luzon, deploying nearly 6,000 police personnel to key locations in the region.
