MMDA plans to implement AI-Powered Traffic Signal Systems to enhance traffic flow

The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) is exploring the implementation of artificial intelligence (AI)-powered traffic signal systems equipped with video detectors to improve traffic flow in the metropolis.

During a press conference at the MMDA head office in Pasig City on Thursday, MMDA Chair Romando Artes stated that the new system aims to enhance public service by upgrading traffic detection from the current ground loop detection to video detection.

“As we phase in the adaptive signaling system, this innovation represents a major step towards ensuring smooth traffic flow, minimizing road crashes, and optimizing efficiency,” Artes remarked.

The MMDA plans to install the new AI-powered system by next year.

According to the MMDA Traffic Engineering Center, the advantages of an AI traffic signal system with video detectors include increased resilience against damage from roadworks, harsh weather, and physical interference. The system is also capable of capturing additional information from passing vehicles, such as their speed, direction, and license plate numbers.

Artes noted that the previous system was incompatible with traffic signal countdown timers, which led some drivers to speed through intersections and run red lights.

Last week, the MMDA announced the removal of traffic light countdown timers at 96 intersections along major roads in Metro Manila. These timers were replaced with an adaptive signaling system that utilizes sensors to enhance traffic management.
