Misugi  stops Criss Cross juggernaut, claims Player of the Week honors

The Spikers’ Turf Invitational Conference witnessed a changing of the guard this past week, as Kindai University’s sensational open spiker, Haruki Misugi, not only decimated the competition but single-handedly dismantled the seemingly impenetrable eight-game winning streak of powerhouse Criss Cross.

The 17-year-old phenom has been crowned the Player of the Week (Nov. 21-22), an honor he earned with a pair of masterclass performances that signaled his arrival on the international stage.

Misugi, a rising star for the visiting Japanese squad, first dominated the court in a swift 3-0 (25-15, 25-12, 25-13) clinic against ProVolley Academy, where his offense was relentless, delivering a clean 16 points, all stemming from attacks.

However, the true defining moment came the following day in a gritty, four-set war against the previously undefeated Criss Cross.

Under immense pressure, the young dynamo showcased a complete game, notching 14 crucial points while stabilizing the back row with an incredible 17 successful receptions and seven defensive digs.

The 25-22, 25-22, 19-25, 25-22 upset sent shockwaves through the league, pulling Kindai University level with Savouge Aesthetics at a pristine 2-0 record.

“I feel it’s a big challenge going up against the Philippine teams,” Misugi stated through an interpreter, acknowledging the intensity of the league.

“I appreciate being able to play volleyball in front of Filipino fans.”

Misugi’s dominant stretch saw him edge out domestic stars like Mark Calado (Savouge), Jude Garcia (Criss Cross), and Jau Umandal (Cignal) for the coveted weekly distinction.

His win marks a historic milestone, making him the first player from a visiting international squad to secure the honor bestowed by the Spikers’ Turf Press Corps.

As Kindai University prepares for their upcoming clash with winless University of Santo Tomas–Gameville, Kindai coach Hideyuki Mitsuyama summed up his team’s mission: “Volleyball is more popular in Asia… We want to help spread better volleyball even more.”

With Misugi spearheading the charge, the Japanese visitors are not just competing—they are actively rewriting the narrative of the tournament, transforming Kindai University from a formidable guest into a genuine championship contender.
