A series of weak earthquakes was recorded across parts of Occidental Mindoro on Sunday, Jan. 18, with no reports of damage, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.
The agency said the strongest tremor, at magnitude 3.1, struck at 5:58 p.m. and originated 16 kilometers south-southeast of Looc at a depth of 39 kilometers.
Earlier in the afternoon, a magnitude 1.3 quake was detected at 3:53 p.m., centered seven kilometers south-southeast of Abra de Ilog and occurring 33 kilometers below the surface.
Phivolcs also logged another minor event at 8:20 p.m., measuring magnitude 1.4 and traced to an area about 33 kilometers south-southwest of Calintaan at a depth of nine kilometers.
All three earthquakes were identified as tectonic in nature, linked to natural movements along underground fault lines.
State seismologists said the tremors were too weak to cause structural damage and were not expected to generate aftershocks.
Occidental Mindoro sits near active fault systems, prompting authorities to reiterate calls for residents to stay informed and practice basic earthquake safety measures.
