MANILA – A two-minute minor phreatomagmatic eruption occurred at Taal Volcano’s main crater on Wednesday, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.

The volcanic activity generated a plume reaching 250 meters above the crater. Alert 1 (low-level unrest) is maintained.

Phivolcs also logged a one-minute minor phreatic eruption at the volcano in the past 24 hours.

Phreatomagmatic eruptions result when magma and water interact.

Meanwhile, at least two volcanic earthquakes were also recorded in the past 24 hours, one of which occurred at 12:33 a.m. on Oct. 20.

An average of 1,002 tonnes of sulfur dioxide emissions were recorded Tuesday.

Phivolcs earlier said Taal Volcano’s small eruptions, which happen several times a day, are normal behavior and have occurred since 2021. (PNA)
