MANILA – The government is seeking PHP1.62 billion for its Expanded National Greening Program (NGP) in 2027, nearly tripling its current funding to support the rehabilitation, maintenance, and protection of 18,645 hectares of forests and other suitable lands nationwide.
The proposed allocation under the 2027 National Expenditure Program (NEP) is 186.32 percent higher than the PHP565 million appropriated for the program under the 2026 General Appropriations Act (GAA), the Department of Budget and Management (DBM) said Wednesday.
In his budget message, President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. underscored the importance of environmental protection and climate resilience to the country’s long-term security and prosperity.
“By protecting our natural resources today and strengthening our capacity to withstand future risks, we are building a cleaner, greener, safer, and more resilient Bagong Pilipinas for present and future generations,” he said.
Beyond tree planting, the Expanded NGP funds the maintenance and protection of rehabilitated areas to help ensure the survival of planted trees and sustain reforestation gains.
The program also provides livelihood opportunities for upland and lowland communities, including Indigenous Peoples, while involving them in the protection and sustainable management of forests.
The proposed PHP1.62 billion allocation forms part of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources’ PHP29.47 billion proposed budget for 2027, up 4.24 percent from its PHP28.27 billion enacted budget for 2026.
