Joe R. Zaldarriaga, Vice President and Head of Corporate Communications at Meralco, has called on the next generation of communicators to harness the power of innovation while remaining firmly rooted in ethical and responsible practices.
Speaking during his opening remarks on the final day of The Communications Olympiad—a nationwide training and competition for students in communications, marketing, and public relations—Zaldarriaga emphasized the critical role young communicators play in shaping the future of the industry. The three-day event, co-organized by the International Association of Business Communicators (IABC) Philippines and the COMCO School of Communications, brought together students from across the country, including regions such as Metro Manila, CALABARZON, Tarlac, Bicol, Cordilleras, Antique, and Iloilo City.
Zaldarriaga, who also chairs IABC Philippines, urged participants to fully embrace the wealth of digital platforms and technological tools available today, but to do so with integrity, purpose, and a commitment to truth.
“We don’t just inform—we have the ability to transform. To shape mindsets, influence attitudes, and move people toward a more conscious and responsible way of living,” he said.
He further highlighted the unique strengths of today’s youth in driving engagement and sparking meaningful conversations, pointing out their potential not only to set trends but to create lasting, positive impact.
“You are not just the future. You are the now,” Zaldarriaga concluded. “You are the hope of our profession—the ones who will ensure that communication in the Philippines stays true to its core: clarity, purpose, ethics, and truth.”
