As the digital landscape continues to evolve, ensuring cybersecurity awareness in education has never been more critical. Recognizing the pivotal role of teachers in shaping digitally responsible students, the Manila Electric Company (Meralco), under the leadership of Manuel V. Pangilinan, has launched a pioneering cybersecurity awareness program designed to equip educators with the knowledge and skills to foster a safer online environment within the academe.
Dubbed “Meralco Wavemaker,” this initiative is a collaborative effort between Meralco’s Cyber Security Group (CSG) and its social development arm, One Meralco Foundation (OMF). More than just an awareness campaign, Wavemaker seeks to transform educators into cybersecurity advocates who can integrate digital safety principles into their classrooms and inspire responsible online behavior among students.
The program aims to build a culture of digital responsibility in schools and help students navigate the online world safely and ethically by arming teachers with foundational cybersecurity knowledge.
Building a cyber-resilient education sector
Meralco, in partnership with the Department of Education – National Capital Region (DepEd NCR) and the Philippine National Police Anti-Cybercrime Group (PNP-ACG), conducted its pilot training session with 60 public high school teachers from Metro Manila. Leading the initiative was DepEd Assistant Secretary for Operations and NCR Regional Director Jocelyn DR. Andaya, who emphasized the urgency of cybersecurity education in today’s digital era.
“Cyber threats are real, and they are happening now. Educators must be prepared to recognize and respond to these risks. Programs like Meralco Wavemaker provide teachers with the tools they need to protect themselves and their students in an increasingly digital world,” Andaya stated.
During the training, PNP-NCR Cyber Response Unit and Regional Anti-Cybercrime Unit Police Colonel Jay Guillermo highlighted the agency’s ongoing efforts to combat cybercrimes. They encouraged educators to play an active role in raising awareness and reporting online threats to authorities.
Empowering educators as digital guardians
The training covered essential topics such as:
✅ Identifying cyber threats (e.g., phishing, hacking, and data breaches)
✅ Practicing responsible digital citizenship
✅ Responding effectively to cyberattacks
✅ Understanding career opportunities in cybersecurity
Meralco aims to conduct quarterly training sessions for secondary school teachers within its franchise areas and eventually expand the program nationwide.
Marilene P. Tayag, Meralco’s chief information security officer, emphasized the transformative vision behind Wavemaker, “This is not just an awareness program—it’s a movement to cultivate a generation of responsible digital citizens. We want the Philippines to be recognized globally for its cybersecurity professionals, and that journey starts with empowering our teachers. They are the key to creating waves of change in digital safety.”

Ronnie Aperocho
Ronnie L. Aperocho, Meralco’s Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer, reinforced that cybersecurity is a community effort that requires strong partnerships between corporations, educators, and government agencies.
“Teachers are more than just mentors; they are role models who shape students’ digital behavior. By equipping them with the right knowledge, we are ensuring that the next generation is digitally skilled and cyber-resilient,” Aperocho explained.
A commitment to a safer digital future
Meralco Wavemaker underscores the company’s commitment to expanding cybersecurity awareness beyond corporate settings and into the heart of education. By empowering educators, Meralco is leading the charge toward a safer, more informed, and resilient digital future for all Filipinos.
With cyber threats on the rise, schools must become safe spaces not only in the physical world but also in the digital realm. Through initiatives like Wavemaker, educators are not just teaching students—they are protecting them, guiding them, and preparing them to navigate an increasingly complex digital world with confidence and responsibility.
