Meralco strengthens inclusive workplace culture through #Mbrace, expands safe spaces and allyship initiatives

Manuel V. Pangilinan-led Manila Electric Company (Meralco) continues to strengthen its commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion through its enterprise-wide #Mbrace program—an initiative that fosters a safe, empowering, and inclusive workplace where every employee is respected, valued, and given the opportunity to thrive.

First launched in 2021 to advance women empowerment and representation, #Mbrace has since evolved to champion greater inclusivity for LGBTQIA+ employees and Persons with Disabilities (PWDs), reinforcing Meralco’s vision of creating a workplace that celebrates diversity in all its forms.

As part of its Pride Month celebration in June, Meralco rolled out meaningful initiatives that underscored its commitment to allyship and belonging. Rainbow-colored crosswalks once again brightened the company’s Ortigas headquarters and sector offices, serving as visible symbols of inclusion and support. Employees’ stories and perspectives were highlighted, while senior leaders stood in solidarity to promote a culture of acceptance and respect.

Further strengthening its inclusive workplace efforts, Meralco expanded its all-gender restroom facilities at its headquarters, with plans to roll out similar spaces across more company sites. Designed to provide safe, accessible, and welcoming environments for everyone, these facilities reflect the company’s commitment to dignity, comfort, and equal access for all employees.

In partnership with the Philippine Financial & Inter-industry Pride (PFIP), Meralco also hosted the “Safe to Be Me” webinar, bringing together leaders and employees from across the Meralco Group to foster meaningful conversations on allyship, psychological safety, and everyday actions that help build inclusive spaces in the workplace.

“Being yourself at work should never be a privilege, but a norm. Safe spaces are built not only through policies, but through how we listen, how we speak, and how we treat one another with respect and empathy,” said Meralco Chief Human Resources Officer Hans R. Montenegro.

Echoing this commitment, Meralco Chief Information Security Officer Marilene P. Tayag emphasized that allyship begins with intentional everyday actions.

“Safe spaces are not just about having the right words in our employee handbook—it’s about the daily choices we make, the conversations we choose to have, the assumptions we challenge, and the moments we choose to stand beside someone instead of remaining silent,” Tayag said.

The #Mbrace program forms part of Meralco’s broader sustainability agenda, Powering the Good Life, which is anchored on the pillars of Power, Planet, People, and Prosperity. By embedding diversity, inclusion, and allyship into its culture and operations, Meralco continues to build a more compassionate, equitable, and future-ready workplace—one where every employee can safely and confidently bring their authentic selves to work.
