Twenty-eight engineering students have completed the Meralco Power Academy’s PowerCamp internship program, gaining hands-on industry experience and technical training aimed at preparing them for careers in the country’s rapidly evolving energy sector.
The student-interns were recognized during a graduation ceremony in Pasig City after completing the 280-hour program, which ran from June to July.
PowerCamp, the flagship internship program of the Meralco Power Academy (MPA), combines immersive on-the-job training with project-based activities designed to sharpen participants’ technical expertise, leadership skills, and understanding of real-world energy operations.
“PowerCamp has introduced me to what a work environment is like, along with Meralco’s responsibility to serve the people, and I will be looking forward to seeing all the possibilities of my future as an engineer in a new light,” said Frances Margaret Maria T. Recto, a PowerCamp intern from the University of the Philippines.

This year’s participants came from leading universities across Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao, including the University of the Philippines, University of Santo Tomas, Ateneo de Manila University, Mapúa University, Nueva Ecija University of Science and Technology, Polytechnic University of the Philippines, Technological Institute of the Philippines, Technological University of the Philippines, Cebu Institute of Technology, University of San Carlos, Mindanao State University-General Santos, and Mindanao State University-Iligan Institute of Technology.
MPA Trustee and Meralco PowerGen President and Chief Executive Officer Emmanuel V. Rubio said the next generation of engineers will play a critical role as the Philippines confronts increasing energy demand and a changing power landscape.
“As future engineers, scientists, and industry leaders, PowerCampers will have an important role in shaping how the country responds to its growing energy needs,” Rubio said.
Alongside the graduation, MPA welcomed 35 former PowerCamp participants to a homecoming event at the Meralco headquarters in Pasig City, underscoring the program’s growing network of young engineering professionals.
Of the returning alumni, seven have joined companies under the One Meralco Group, while 14 are preparing to take their engineering licensure examinations.
PowerCamp alumna Heart Well S. Sumalinog said the program became a major stepping stone in her professional journey.
“The PowerCamp opened doors for me and gave me an opportunity to experience the industry firsthand. It became a stepping stone in my career, and MGEN reached out to me even before I started reviewing for the board exam. Now, I’m here as a Cadet Engineer at MGEN Renewables, and I’m grateful for the opportunity that started with PowerCamp,” she said.
Meralco Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer Ronnie L. Aperocho said the initiative goes beyond recruitment, serving as a platform for developing talent for the broader energy industry.
“We firmly believe that One Meralco talent pipeline can emerge from anywhere—even from the least expected corners of our nation. For the One Meralco Group, PowerCamp has never been just a way to recruit top graduates for our companies. It is a vital platform to discover, nurture, and train the brightest talents for the entire energy industry,” Aperocho said.
Through PowerCamp, Meralco Power Academy continues to strengthen the country’s pipeline of engineering talent as the energy sector demands a new generation of professionals equipped to support expansion, modernization, and the transition toward a more sustainable power system.
