In a move to strengthen the future of the country’s power sector, Meralco Power Academy (MPA) has joined forces with Mindanao State University–Iligan Institute of Technology (MSU-IIT) to advance energy education and foster innovation.
Key representatives from both institutions formalized the partnership through a memorandum of understanding signed at Meralco’s headquarters in Pasig City. The collaboration aims to bolster capability-building through specialized training programs, learning events, and immersive industry experiences for students, including internships.
MSU-IIT chancellor Alizedney M. Ditucalan highlighted the importance of bridging the gap between academia and industry. “In the past, higher education institutions and the industry moved in different directions. The key to solving that disconnect is stronger collaboration—not just in talent and workforce development, but also in research and innovation,” he said.
The partnership includes a range of initiatives designed to nurture research and development in the energy sector. Among these are joint events such as the Mindanao leg of the Young Engineers and Scientists Summit, co-development of advanced academic programs in renewable energy and nuclear science, as well as professional lectures, research conferences, and laboratory collaborations.
Meralco executive vice president, chief operating officer, and MPA president Ronnie L. Aperocho—an accomplished MSU alumnus—emphasized that the alliance reflects a broader commitment to the country’s energy transition.
“This partnership is more than a formal agreement—it’s a shared commitment to building a future-ready energy workforce,” said Aperocho. “Together with MSU-IIT, we aim to empower aspiring engineers and scientists with the tools and knowledge they need to help shape a more sustainable energy future for the Philippines.”
