Meralco wasted no time in addressing an incident involving one of its contracted K9 handlers after a video showing alleged mistreatment of a service dog surfaced online this week.
The power distributor confirmed Thursday that it has already suspended the handler, employed under security contractor Search and Secure Canine Training and Services International (SAS K9), and launched a full investigation into the matter.
“We acted immediately upon learning of the incident. What was seen on the video is unacceptable and does not reflect Meralco’s values of integrity and malasakit [compassion],” the company said in a statement.
Meralco stressed that its priority is the welfare of the service dog, identified as Bingo, assuring the public that he is now safe and receiving proper care. “Bingo’s well-being remains our top concern. We are making sure he is cared for in a safe, nurturing environment,” the company added.
The video, uploaded by a concerned citizen, prompted Meralco to re-examine its policies regarding animal welfare. The company has committed to strengthening its guidelines and working closely with SAS K9 and relevant authorities to ensure that all service animals under its care are treated with dignity and respect.
Meralco’s swift response has drawn praise from some netizens, who lauded the company for taking accountability and prioritizing Bingo’s safety. The company also vowed to continue monitoring the situation to ensure the handler is held fully accountable.
Animal welfare groups welcomed Meralco’s commitment, noting that proactive measures from big corporations set the tone for industry-wide improvements in how service animals are treated.
In the age of social media, where public scrutiny can be instant and intense, Meralco’s decisive action underscores its pledge to uphold compassion not just for people, but for every living being under its care.
