The Meralco Bolts are suiting up once again to represent the Philippines in the East Asia Super League (EASL) — and they’re fired up for the challenge.

The EASL officially confirmed on Monday that Meralco will be the PBA’s sole entry in the league’s third season, which tips off on October 8. This marks the Bolts’ third straight stint in Asia’s elite club competition, a nod to the team’s consistency and competitive spirit.

“We’re honored to be selected again to play against the best teams in the region,” said head coach Luigi Trillo. “This isn’t just about Meralco — we’re carrying the PBA and Philippine basketball with us. That’s a big responsibility and a big motivation.”

Meralco is coming off a quarterfinals appearance in the PBA Season 48 Philippine Cup and will look to build on their EASL journey so far. In their debut season (2023-24), they struggled with a 1-6 record, but bounced back with a 2-4 showing last season — falling just one win short of a Final Four slot.

This year, the road won’t be any easier. The Bolts are slotted in Group B, facing heavyweights like Taiwan’s Taoyuan Pauian Pilots (P. League+ champions), Japan B.League runners-up Ryukyu Golden Kings, and the always-dangerous Macau Black Bears.

Making things more complicated? Timing and roster constraints.

Meralco will be juggling its PBA Season 50 Philippine Cup campaign — which doesn’t allow imports — before switching gears and integrating foreign reinforcements for the EASL.

“Finding the right imports is a real challenge,” Trillo admitted. “These other teams are locked in year-round with their guys. We can only offer short-term contracts, so it takes a lot of scouting and negotiation to get the right fit.”

Still, the Bolts remain undeterred, drawing strength from their experience, growing chemistry, and the pride of waving the Philippine flag on the international stage.
