DOTr offers free rides for MRT-3 passengers facing tap-out issues

The Department of Transportation (DOTr) is providing free rides to passengers who experience tap-out issues with the new cashless payment system at the Metro Rail Transit Line 3 (MRT-3).

In a statement on Monday, the DOTr announced that affected passengers will receive free non-expiring single journey tickets (SJT) worth the maximum MRT-3 fare, which they can use for their next ride. This initiative aligns with President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s directive to address concerns raised by MRT-3 passengers regarding the new payment system.

The tap-out issue has been attributed to system errors during the pilot run of the cashless payment. “The DOTr has been closely monitoring concerns raised by MRT-3 riders, particularly cases where passengers were charged the maximum fare of PHP28 due to system issues when tapping out at exit turnstiles,” the statement noted.

To claim the free SJT, passengers who encounter issues can visit any MRT-3 ticket booth and present proof of the failed tap-out transaction.

Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon expressed gratitude to MRT-3 passengers for their support of the new system and requested their understanding regarding the problems encountered during the pilot run. “Rest assured na within this August, dadami pa ang cashless turnstiles natin at tuloy-tuloy ang system upgrades para iwas-aberya (we will have more cashless turnstiles and we’ll continue system upgrades to avoid errors),” Dizon stated.

The new cashless payment turnstiles, launched on July 25, accept GCash QR code payments, Android phones with Near Field Communication (NFC)-enabled payment, and Mastercard and Visa debit and credit tap cards. The Department of Transportation (DOTr) is providing free rides to passengers who experience tap-out issues with the new cashless payment system at the Metro Rail Transit Line 3 (MRT-3).
