Mega Prime Foods Inc. is widening its reach beyond the sea and into agriculture with a major new investment that underscores its growing role in strengthening the country’s food supply.
The company behind Mega Sardines has formally broken ground on the Mega CP Layer Complex in Zamboanga City in partnership with Charoen Pokphand Foods, one of the world’s largest agro-industrial and food companies. The project is poised to become one of the first world-class egg layering facilities in the region and is expected to reinforce local food production while supporting the Philippines’ long-term food security goals.
The venture marks a significant expansion for Mega Prime Foods as it diversifies from its long-established seafood business into modern agriculture. It also brings together two companies with complementary strengths: Mega Prime Foods’ strong domestic market presence and consumer insight, and CPF’s extensive global experience in integrated poultry operations.
Michelle Tiu Lim-Chan, president and chief executive officer of Mega Prime Foods, said the collaboration reflects the company’s commitment to innovation and nation-building. She said the move beyond seafood is part of a broader effort to help improve food security, uplift communities, and make quality nutrition more accessible to Filipino families.
Marvin Tiu Lim, chief growth and development officer of Mega Prime Foods, said the partnership signals a more ambitious role for the company in helping feed the nation. By pairing Mega’s local expertise with CPF’s global agricultural capabilities, he said the project is designed to support both present-day nutrition needs and the long-term development of the food industry.
At the heart of the development is a facility with an estimated capacity of up to 100 million eggs a year, a scale that could make a meaningful contribution to the country’s supply of affordable protein. The project also has room for significant expansion, with initial projections showing capacity may eventually increase up to fivefold.
The Mega CP Layer Complex will follow CPF’s fully integrated layer complex model, which combines advanced farm technologies, rigorous biosecurity measures, and globally benchmarked production systems tailored for local conditions. The result is expected to be a highly efficient operation built around consistency, safety, and scalability.
Sustainability is also central to the project. Spread across 22 hectares, the facility will include technologies such as an odor control system and a biogas plant that converts waste into renewable energy for electricity generation. These features are intended to support more responsible operations while reducing environmental impact.
Beyond its production targets, the project is expected to create jobs and generate economic opportunities in Mindanao, particularly for communities surrounding the facility. It also strengthens Zamboanga’s position as an emerging site for modern agricultural development and large-scale food infrastructure.
For Mega Prime Foods, the investment represents more than a business expansion. It signals a strategic shift toward becoming a broader food enterprise with deeper involvement in the country’s agricultural future. From its beginnings in 1975 through Mega Fishing Corporation, the company has grown into one of the Philippines’ leading food manufacturers, and this latest move reflects its ambition to help shape a more secure and resilient food system.
