Mavericks once floated Luka Dončić trade to Timberwolves for Anthony Edwards

In a surprising revelation, the Dallas Mavericks reportedly explored the possibility of trading franchise star Luka Dončić to the Minnesota Timberwolves in exchange for rising superstar Anthony Edwards.

According to Sam Amick of The Athletic, Mavericks general manager Nico Harrison reached out to the Timberwolves’ front office weeks before ultimately finalizing a blockbuster trade that sent Dončić to the Los Angeles Lakers for Anthony Davis.

The Timberwolves were reportedly taken aback by the inquiry and swiftly rejected the proposal. “Minnesota, according to league sources, was stunned that Dallas was even considering parting ways with Dončić,” the report stated.

The trade that wasn’t
Harrison maintained during a February 2 press conference that the only serious discussions regarding Dončić’s departure involved the Lakers. However, the semantics of what constitutes a trade discussion remain unclear, as initial exploratory talks with Minnesota did take place, albeit informally.

Following the deal, Edwards expressed his shock at the trade and cautioned fellow NBA players to stay vigilant about their own situations.

“I’m scared, man. Tim [Connelly], if you’re gonna trade me, let me know, dawg,” Edwards joked, addressing the Timberwolves president of basketball operations. “When Luka got traded, that showed anybody can get moved.”

Dončić thriving in Los Angeles
Since arriving in Los Angeles, Dončić has made an immediate impact. In his first six games with the Lakers, he has averaged 19.3 points, 9.7 rebounds, 6.7 assists, and 1.5 steals per game, leading the team to a 4-2 record with him in the lineup.

The Lakers, now sitting fourth in the Western Conference with a 36-21 record, have won three straight games with Dončić playing a pivotal role.

A head-to-head battle
The much-anticipated first meeting between Dončić and Edwards since the trade took place on Thursday night, with the Lakers securing a 111-102 victory over the Timberwolves.

Dončić delivered a strong performance, recording 21 points, 13 rebounds, and five assists. Edwards, meanwhile, contributed 18 points, six rebounds, and five assists but found himself in hot water after picking up his 16th technical foul of the season, leading to an automatic one-game suspension.

To add to his troubles, Edwards threw a basketball into the crowd after his ejection, likely resulting in a fine from the league.

Looking ahead
Dončić and Edwards remain integral to their respective teams’ playoff aspirations as the dust settles on these midseason roster shake-ups.

While the Timberwolves opted to hold onto Edwards, the Mavericks’ decision to move Dončić marks a significant shift in their franchise direction. Time will tell how these moves shape the future of both franchises as the postseason draws closer.
