Mastercard announced a major leadership transition in its Asia Pacific operations, marking the end of an era as Ari Sarker, President for Asia Pacific, steps down from his post at the close of 2025.
After more than a decade at the helm, Sarker will transition into an advisory role, focusing on strategic initiatives and mentoring the next generation of leaders to ensure continuity and growth.
Sarker has been widely credited with spearheading Mastercard’s expansion across Asia Pacific, strengthening ties with governments and enterprises, and driving innovation in digital payments and financial inclusion.
“Ari’s impact on Mastercard and the region has been extraordinary,” said Ling Hai, President, Asia Pacific, Europe, Middle East and Africa, Mastercard. “He has championed innovation, inclusion, and deep collaboration across industries. We are grateful for his leadership and pleased he will continue to guide us in an advisory capacity.”
Effective January 1, 2026, Richard “Rich” Wormald, currently Division President for Australasia, will succeed Sarker as President, Asia Pacific. Known for his performance-driven approach and strong engagement with partners and regulators, Wormald has led Mastercard’s business in Australia, New Zealand, and the Pacific with a focus on innovation and sustainable growth.
Reflecting on his tenure, Sarker said: “It has been an incredible journey leading Mastercard in one of the most dynamic regions in the world. I am proud of what we have achieved together and grateful to our teams, partners, and customers who made it all possible. Rich is a trusted colleague and a thoughtful leader—I am confident he will continue to drive the business forward with purpose.”
Wormald expressed enthusiasm for the new role, saying: “I’m honored to lead Mastercard in Asia Pacific and build on the strong foundation Ari has created. This region is diverse, fast-growing, and full of opportunity. I look forward to working with our teams and partners to deliver even greater impact.”
To ensure a seamless transition, Sarker and Wormald will work side by side in the coming months, jointly engaging with stakeholders across the region.
As part of the leadership reshuffle, Mastercard also named Paul Monnington as the incoming Division President for Australasia, effective January 2026. Monnington, who previously led Woolworths’ Wpay business and held senior roles at Woolworths Group and National Australia Bank (NAB), brings extensive experience in retail payments and fintech innovation.
“I am thrilled to be joining Mastercard at such an exciting time,” Monnington said. “The company’s commitment to innovation, inclusion, and customer-centric partnerships strongly resonates with me, and I look forward to contributing to its growth story in Australasia.”
Monnington will report directly to Wormald and will oversee markets including Australia, New Zealand, and the Pacific Islands.
With this leadership transition, Mastercard underscores its long-term commitment to strengthening its presence in Asia Pacific—a region at the forefront of digital transformation and global commerce. Backed by a deep bench of seasoned leaders, the company aims to accelerate innovation, forge stronger partnerships, and shape the future of payments across one of the world’s most dynamic markets.
