Time and time again, Mariah Carey proves that her career longevity is driven by her reputation as a trendsetter rather than chasing them. In this instance, the trend comes to her as MrBeast appears in a cameo in her latest music video for “Type Dangerous.”

Released on June 15, the three-minute music video features a narrative storyline that references her old music videos. It begins with Mariah arriving on a prom night, a nod to her 2005 classic, “It’s Like That.” Her all-black ensemble and smoky eyeliner evoke her secret agent look from “Honey” in 1997. And then, the cyberpunk-esque motorcycle chase scene is a throwback to her Y2K-inspired music video for “Boy (I Need You)” in 2002.

The music video revolves around the plotline of Mariah finding the type of lover she likes—dangerous, as the song title suggests. As it progresses, MrBeast gets revealed as the “Mr. Dangerous” she is looking for. This cameo shocked fans, as it was unexpected that his cameo was the surprise guest teased before its release.Â
MrBeast is a YouTuber who is known as the most-subscribed personality on the platform, with over 405 million subscribers. He gained popularity from his content, which varied from games, challenges, and stunts to philanthropy and charity work.
The music video is directed by former collaborator Joseph Kahn, who has already produced some of Mariah Carey’s visuals before. He is also known as the man behind other iconic music videos in pop culture history, such as Taylor Swift’s “Bad Blood” and Britney Spears’ “Toxic.” This credit under his belt should set the tone for what is to come in this new music video, and it didn’t disappoint, as it effectively integrated Mariah’s tongue-in-cheek humor, sarcastic diva persona, and camp.Â
As of today, Type Dangerous is receiving decent commercial performance in its first week. It debuted at #95 on the Billboard Hot 100, marking Mariah Carey’s first non-holiday song since 2017 to enter the charts. It also peaked at #1 on the R&B/Hip-Hop Digital Song Sales Chart in the US and #9 on the Singles Sales Chart in the UK.
She also recently performed the song live at the BET Awards, where she received the Ultimate Icon Award on the same night, as well as at Capital’s Summertime Ball in London.
