MANILA – President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to strengthening the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) to enhance maritime security, improve emergency response capabilities, and protect the country’s sovereign rights.

Speaking during the PCG Change of Command and Retirement Ceremony at Pier 13, South Harbor, Manila, on Monday, October 19, Marcos emphasized the Coast Guard’s vital role in safeguarding Philippine waters and assisting communities during maritime emergencies.

“Across our waters, the PCG works alongside other maritime agencies to safeguard our people, protect our maritime interests, and uphold our sovereign rights,” Marcos said.

The President recognized the Coast Guard’s contributions to maritime law enforcement, search and rescue operations, disaster response, and the protection of Filipino fishermen.

“The Philippine Coast Guard is, in many ways, the face of the Filipino at sea,” he said.

Marcos noted that the agency continues to respond to emergencies involving vessels, severe weather conditions, and fishermen requiring assistance despite increasingly complex maritime challenges.

He also expressed confidence in newly appointed PCG Commandant Vice Admiral Rommel Supangan, who previously served as commander of the Coast Guard Fleet, Coast Guard District Palawan, and Marine Environmental Protection Command.

“I am confident that you will build on the accomplishments of your predecessor, further strengthening the Philippine Coast Guard with the full support of this Administration,” Marcos told Supangan.

The President assured the agency of continued government support in improving its operational readiness, maritime security capabilities, and international cooperation.

He also urged Coast Guard personnel to uphold discipline, courage, and professionalism as the institution transitions to new leadership.

“For 125 years, generations of Coast Guardians have answered the call to protect our people and our seas. That responsibility now rests in your hands,” Marcos said.

The President concluded by calling for continued vigilance in protecting the country’s maritime interests and ensuring the safety of Filipinos at sea.

“Together, let us keep watch over our seas and safeguard the future of our nation and our people,” he added.
