Marcos administration moves against flood control scandal

The Marcos administration is taking action against those involved in the flood control scandal, DPWH Secretary Vince Dizon said Wednesday.

The statement followed the filing of the first batch of cases at the Sandiganbayan against former Ako Bicol party-list Rep. Elizaldy Co and several former DPWH officials over alleged anomalous flood control projects in Oriental Mindoro.

The DPWH chief assured the public that the cases are “solid.”
“This is what the President is saying: we are all impatient, we are all angry—the people. But we need to follow the process to ensure that those who should be held accountable are held accountable,” Dizon said.

He added that these cases are progressing faster than other graft cases.
“It was filed in the Sandiganbayan less than two months ago, and we think that the arrest warrants will be issued in the next few days,” he said.

Dizon noted that former DPWH officials and contractors will also face charges over ghost and substandard flood control projects in Bulacan, following the President’s directive to recover public funds and hold the guilty accountable.

The Office of the Ombudsman filed charges against Co, DPWH Mimaropa officials, and Sunwest Corporation directors over a substandard PHP289-million road dike along the Mag-Asawang Tubig River. They face allegations of malversation of public funds and violations under the Anti-Graft and Corrupt Practices Act.
