Magnolia Hotshots will seek to build on their impressive start in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup when they face the Converge FiberXers this Sunday at the Ynares Center in Antipolo.
Both teams are looking to improve their respective performances, with Magnolia looking for consistency and Converge determined to bounce back from a tough loss.
The Hotshots began their mid-season campaign with a 118-100 victory over Blackwater last Thursday. Despite the dominant performance, Magnolia head coach Chito Victolero is not taking Converge lightly.
“Converge is a dangerous team for us, especially with their young and aggressive players,” Victolero noted. “Their system is run-and-gun, so we need to sharpen our defensive execution and dominate the boards.”
Victolero emphasized the importance of limiting Converge’s transition game and the need for a disciplined offense to prevent turnovers and fast-break opportunities.
Challenges without Calvin Abueva
Magnolia will be without Calvin Abueva, who suffered a neck injury in the game against Blackwater. Victolero acknowledged Abueva’s absence as a significant loss, citing his energy, rebounding, and hustle as critical factors the team will miss.
“Other players need to step up, especially those in Calvin’s position,” Victolero said.
The threat of Converge
Converge, coming off a 106-117 loss to Eastern, is expected to come out strong as they aim to improve their 1-1 record. The FiberXers’ import, Cheick Diallo, looms as a significant threat after posting a conference-high 43 points and nine rebounds in their previous game.
Victolero expressed concern over Diallo’s dominance and the aggression of Converge’s young locals, including Alec Stockton, Schonny Winston, Jordan Heading, and Justin Arana.
Magnolia’s advantage
Despite the challenges, Victolero remains confident in his team’s ability to rise to the occasion. Magnolia’s import, Ricardo Ratliffe, showcased his reliability with 30 points and 18 rebounds in their opener. Victolero believes Ratliffe’s experience and chemistry with the locals will improve as the conference progresses.
“We’re still working on jelling as a team, but I’m confident we’ll get better with each game,” Victolero said.
Keys to victory
For Magnolia, the game plan centers on tightening their defensive rotations, dominating the boards, and maintaining their offensive execution to limit Converge’s opportunities. Meanwhile, Converge will rely on Diallo’s scoring and their youthful roster’s energy to disrupt the Hotshots.
With both teams having clear objectives and strategies, Sunday’s clash promises an exciting battle as Magnolia looks to extend their winning streak and Converge fights to return to the win column.
