Magnitude 5.8 quake jolts Southern Leyte

A magnitude 5.8 earthquake jolted Southern Leyte on Thursday, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported.

The tectonic quake struck 10.01 kilometers southeast of the municipality of San Francisco at 7:39 a.m. It was 14 kilometers deep.

Intensity VI was felt in San Francisco, while intensity V was felt in Anahawan, Hinunangan, Hinundayan, Libagon, Liloan, Padre Burgos, Pintuyan, San Juan, and San Ricardo in Southern Leyte.

Intensity IV was reported in Abuyog, Bato, City of Baybay, Hilongos, Hindang, and Inopacan, Leyte; Bontoc, Limasawa, City of Maasin, Macrohon, Malitbog, Saint Bernard, Silago, Sogod, and Tomas Oppus in Southern Leyte.

Intensity III was felt in Cebu City; Alangalang, Albuera, Barugo, Burauen, Carigara, Dagami, Dulag, Jaro, Javier, Julita, Kananga, Macarthur, Mahaplag, Mayorga, Merida, Palo, Santa Fe, Tanauan, and Tolosa in Leyte; City of Surigao in Surigao del Norte.

Intensity II was also reported in Babatngon, Isabel, and Palompon in Leyte; and Cagayan de Oro.

Phivolcs recorded the following instrumental Intensities:

Intensity V – Hinundayan, Padre Burgos, and San Juan in Southern Leyte
Intensity IV – Hinunangan, Maasin City, and Sogod in Southern Leyte; Surigao City in Surigao del Norte
Intensity III – Carigara, Dulag, Kananga, and Palo in Leyte; Ormoc City; Cagan de Oro City
Intensity II – Roxas City in Capiz; Bogo City in Cebu; Leyte in Leyte; Gandara in Samar; Gingoog City in Misamis Oriental
Intensity I – San Francisco in Cebu; Can-Avid in Eastern Samar; Mambajao in Camiguin

Reported intensity is the traditional way of knowing the intensity based on reports of people who felt the earthquake while instrumental intensity is measured using an intensity meter that measures ground acceleration.

Meanwhile, Phivolcs said aftershocks and damage are possible. (PNA)
