Twenty-one bus and UV Express operators face possible franchise suspension or revocation after the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board flagged violations involving EDSA Busway operations and poorly maintained vehicles.
The LTFRB issued show cause orders following monitoring operations that included the deployment of “mystery riders” aboard public utility vehicles.
Some bus drivers were allegedly caught deliberately slowing down along the EDSA Busway. The agency said traffic enforcers had been instructed to enforce a 30-second limit at bus stops.
Two drivers and a conductor were also apprehended for allegedly smoking inside a bus while traveling along the dedicated route.
Separate complaints prompted inspections of UV Express units, particularly those operating between Bulacan and Metro Manila.
Authorities cited several units for problems including defective air-conditioning systems, faded paint, deteriorated seats and unpleasant odors inside the vehicles.
The 21 operators were ordered to explain why their franchises should not be suspended or revoked over the alleged violations.
Acting LTFRB Chairman Greg Pua said public utility vehicle operators were required to comply with standards intended to protect passengers and maintain safe and professional public transportation.
