CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY – The Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board in Northern Mindanao (LTFRB-10) on Friday launched a “mystery rider” initiative to report unregistered public utility vehicles.
In an interview, LTFRB-10 Director Alexes Joseph Bendijo said the program will deputize other PUV drivers and individuals to report verified information on the operation of “colorum” vehicles.
“Informants whose information leads to successful enforcement actions will receive a cash reward as an incentive,” he said.
Bendijo expressed hope that through the “Mystery Rider” program and stronger public cooperation, illegal transport operations can be curtailed, ensuring safer and more legitimate public transportation services across Northern Mindanao.
Meanwhile, the long-awaited Green GSM electric taxis will begin operations in El Salvador City, with services extending to any destination within Northern Mindanao.
Bendijo said there is still no definite date for the start of Green GSM’s operations due to concerns raised by existing taxi operators in the city.
For now, the Green GSM units are stationed at the company’s depot in Barangay Taytay, El Salvador City, where they will be deployed once operations officially commence.
Bendijo also said the national government continues to promote environmentally friendly public transportation under Republic Act 11697, or the Electric Vehicle Industry Development Act.
Under the law, Northern Mindanao has been allocated 500 electric taxi units. Green GSM has secured 300 of these slots, while the LTFRB is encouraging other taxi operators in the region to avail themselves of the remaining 200 franchises. (PNA)
