Thousands filled the Miller Outdoor Theatre in Houston on Saturday, September 13, as Asia Society Texas presented a concert by Tony Award-winning singer Lea Salonga.
The event drew one of the largest gatherings of Filipinos in the city, but the audience was as diverse as it was vast, with fans of all backgrounds and even out-of-town visitors flocking to see the world-renowned artist.
Families brought picnic baskets and blankets, creating a lively festival atmosphere filled with laughter, food, and camaraderie. “Tonight was a very good event for Houston, for the Filipino community, and for the Philippines. Lea is one of the greatest artists our country has to offer,” said Consul General Gunther Emil Sales.
On stage, Salonga delivered a captivating repertoire of Disney favorites, Broadway hits, and West End classics. She moved her kababayans with a heartfelt Tagalog song, which drew an emotional response from the crowd.
“Lea is not just a Filipino treasure but a Broadway treasure and a Disney treasure. Lea is an icon not just for musical theater, but for Filipino artistry,” said Houston-based theater actor Vincent Evangelista.
The concert became more than just a performance—it was a celebration of heritage and unity. As Salonga’s final notes rang across the open skies, the evening stood as a powerful reminder of music’s ability to bring people together and uplift cultural pride.
