Lea Salonga brings Broadway magic to Yankees game with national anthem performance

Broadway icon and Tony Award-winning actress Lea Salonga delivered a heartfelt performance of the U.S. national anthem, “The Star-Spangled Banner,” at a New York Yankees game this week.

The Yankees shared a video of Salonga’s performance via social media on Monday night (Tuesday morning in Manila), captioning the post: “Thank you to Tony-Award Winning Actress Lea Salonga for tonight’s beautiful rendition of our National Anthem.” The team also highlighted her current role in the Broadway show Stephen Sondheim’s Old Friends.

Salonga also posted a snapshot from the event on her Instagram account, writing, “Thanks for having me! Go NYY!!!”

The acclaimed Filipina artist is currently performing on Broadway and recently walked the red carpet at the 78th Tony Awards alongside her son, Nic. She was one of the presenters during the ceremony and continues to be a celebrated figure in both the international and Filipino theater scenes.

Salonga is also nominated for the Distinguished Performance Award at the 2025 Drama League Awards for her work in Sondheim’s Old Friends. She is set to return to the Philippine stage in August, playing The Witch in Into the Woods alongside her son, who will portray Jack.

Salonga’s appearance at the Yankees game adds yet another milestone to her celebrated career, bringing her Broadway prestige with the vibrant energy of American sports culture.
