Police in Laoag City have stepped up enforcement of the local anti-nuisance ordinance during the holiday season.
The Philippine National Police–Laoag Traffic Division began the intensified operations on Dec. 22, according to officials.
Police Master Sergeant Eric Bumagat said the drive targets vehicles equipped with modified mufflers or sound boosters.
Authorities said excessive noise poses health risks and distracts motorists, increasing the chance of road accidents.
Complaints have been common along the Laoag bypass road, particularly late at night.
Residents have reported sleep disruption caused by loud vehicles racing through the area.
“The intensified implementation of the ordinance aims to control the noise on the road through banning vehicles that emit sounds of more than 90 decibels, a noise level within the national safety standard,” Bumagat said.
Vehicles found exceeding the allowable noise limit will face penalties under the ordinance.
Police said the enforcement will continue to ensure road safety and public order.
The Land Transportation Office (LTO) reminded motorists that vehicles undergo noise pollution testing during annual registration.
