Barangay Ginebra puts its playoff fate on the line as it takes a shot at clinching a quarterfinals berth in the PBA Philippine Cup, squaring off against league-leading Rain or Shine in the final game of the league’s historic Bahrain showcase.
The Kings and the Elasto Painters collide at 12 midnight Thursday (Manila time) at the Khalifa City Sports Stadium, with far more than bragging rights at stake. A victory would send Ginebra outright into the quarterfinals, sealing its place in the eight-team playoff cast and sparing it from a nerve-wracking finish to the elimination round.
Ginebra coach Tim Cone understands the magnitude of the moment, but also knows the challenge could hardly be tougher. Rain or Shine enters the matchup brimming with confidence after a convincing 101-92 win over Magnolia earlier this week at the same venue, a result that locked the Elasto Painters into the Top Four and earned them a prized twice-to-beat advantage.
“We know we’ve got a tough assignment in front of us in Rain or Shine, the league leaders,” Cone said. “They’re playing well, they’re playing clutch basketball, and they’re really good when it matters down the stretch. That’s the kind of high-character team you expect from Yeng Guiao.”
That wire-to-wire triumph over Magnolia propelled Rain or Shine to solo first place with an 8-2 record, and the Elasto Painters will be eager to close out their elimination campaign on a high note before shifting their focus to the quarterfinals.
Ginebra, however, arrives with momentum of its own. The Kings have won their last three games, improving to 5-4 and keeping their playoff hopes firmly alive. Still, the path forward is clear but unforgiving. Beat Rain or Shine and the job is done. Fall short, and Ginebra must brace for a do-or-die encounter to keep its season alive.
“We know how tough it’s going to be,” Cone said. “It’s the kind of game that can really springboard us forward, so it’s an important one for us.”
Should the Kings stumble against the Elasto Painters, they will get one final chance to advance when they face Titan Ultra in a knockout game for the last quarterfinals spot. That matchup was originally slated for November 9 but was postponed due to the threat of super typhoon Uwan.
For Ginebra, the equation is simple but the execution will be anything but. Against the league’s hottest team, the Kings aim to seize the moment, avoid the drama of sudden death, and punch their ticket to the next round under the bright lights of Bahrain.
