The rehabilitation of Edsa, Metro Manila’s busiest thoroughfare, will begin at midnight on December 24, Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Secretary Vince Dizon said Wednesday.

Dizon made the announcement during a press conference with acting Transportation Secretary Giovanni Lopez and Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) Chair Don Artes.

“December 24, 11 p.m. to January 5, 4 a.m.,we will be working 24/7 on Edsa during the Christmas holiday and New Year holiday,” Dizon said.

“As Chairman Don said, not many people will use Edsa during this time,” he added.

“Even passengers on the busway — they are not that many,” Dizon said.

“So we will take advantage of that,” he added.

The DPWH chief said the revised rehabilitation plan will take only eight months, shorter than the previous two-year timetable.

He said phase 1 of the project will cover Roxas Boulevard to Orense for four months.

Phase 2 will involve the rehabilitation of the remaining portions of Edsa for another four months, Dizon said.

The total budget for the Edsa rehabilitation is P6 billion.
