KBS to remove footage from UNESCO site following damage complaints

Korean Broadcasting System (KBS) will discard footage filmed at a UNESCO World Heritage site after accusations that its crew caused damage by hammering nails into structures.

The public broadcaster decided not to use the footage following a meeting on Friday with Andong City officials and the Korea Heritage Service. The city had urged KBS to remove the footage.

Earlier this month, police began investigating the KBS drama team for allegedly hammering 10 nails into historic buildings at Byeongsan Seowon, a UNESCO site in Andong, about 190 kilometers southeast of Seoul. The nails were used to hang lanterns during a December 30 shoot, affecting Mandaeru Pavilion, a national treasure.

KBS issued an apology, pledging to repair the site, and implement measures to prevent future damage. The broadcaster also plans to revise its filming guidelines for historic sites and issue a public on-air apology.
