Katy Perry is set to embark on a spaceflight with Blue Origin’s New Shepard rocket as part of the all-female NS-31 mission. The singer shared her excitement during an interview with the Associated Press, emphasizing her interest in science and the deeper meaning behind the journey.
“I’m really excited about the engineering of it all,” Katy said. “I’m excited to learn more about STEM and just the math about what it takes to accomplish this type of thing.”
To prepare, Katy has immersed herself in space-related content. “I was winding down from a rehearsal the other day and I was listening to ‘Cosmos’ by Carl Sagan and reading a book on string theory,” she shared.
A lifelong lover of the stars, Katy said, “I’ve always been interested astrophysics and interested in astronomy and astrology, and the stars. I feel like we are all made of stardust, and we all come from the stars, and it will be exciting to see them twinkle from that site and also have such an appreciation for Mother Earth when we see it in that way.”
The historic NS-31 mission includes Jeff Bezos’ fiancée Lauren Sánchez, CBS broadcaster Gayle King, aerospace engineer Aisha Bowe, producer Kerianne Flynn, and civil rights advocate Amanda Nguyen.
On Instagram, Katy shared, “If you had told me that I would be part of the first ever all-female crew in space, I would have believed you♥️😉.”
Reflecting on her journey, Katy said, “Nothing was beyond my imagination as a child. Although we didn’t grow up with much, I never stopped looking at the world with hopeful WONDER!”
She dedicated the mission to her daughter, Daisy. “I’m flying for my daughter, Daisy, to inspire her to never have limits on her dreams and show her that any type of person can reach their dreams — no matter your background, your ethnicity, your economic situation, or your education level,” Katy told Elle USA.
She added, “I work hard to live my life that way still, and I am motivated more than ever to be an example for my daughter that women should take up space (pun intended). That’s why this opportunity is so incredible — so that I can show all of the youngest & most vulnerable among us to reach for the stars, literally and figuratively. I am honored to be among this diverse group of celestial sisters.”
