The Marriott Grand Ballroom witnessed a fierce battle of emerging gymnastic talent, and Karl Eldrew Yulo stood firm, cementing his place among the world’s elite junior competitors.
The 17-year-old rising star finished eighth in the individual all-around finals of the 3rd Artistic Gymnastics Junior World Championships on Saturday, tallying a formidable 78.731 points among the 24 finalists.
In a dramatic sequence of events, the younger brother of Olympic champion Carlos Yulo proved his mettle on the floor exercise. He delivered a routine that earned him a massive 14.300—the second-highest score posted on the apparatus—a performance that momentarily vaulted him into the third spot overall.
The thrill continued on the pommel horse, where a strong 13.000 performance briefly propelled Yulo to the top of the leaderboard.
However, the unforgiving six-apparatus rotation ultimately proved challenging. His final apparatus, the rings, yielded a score of 12.066, causing him to slip in the final standings and ultimately land in eighth place.
The gold medal went to Arsenii Dukhno, who amassed a commanding 82.031 total. Japan’s Nao Ojima seized the silver with 81.799 points, and China’s Lanbin Yang took the bronze with 81.099 points.
