Kai Sotto’s road to redemption: Back in Koshigaya, eyes on a bigger return

For the first time in months, Kai Sotto was back on the court, sneakers squeaking against the hardwood in Koshigaya’s training gym. No roaring crowds, no thunderous blocks yet—just light drills, careful movements, and the quiet but powerful reminder that the journey back has truly begun.

The 7-foot-3 Gilas Pilipinas center is easing his way into basketball activities after tearing his ACL in January, an injury that not only sidelined him from the Japan B. League but also kept him away from the national team in critical battles. For a young player once dubbed as the future of Philippine basketball, the setback was a test of patience and resilience.

“Non-contact training” may not sound headline-worthy, but for Sotto, it’s a breakthrough. Each controlled jump, each movement without hesitation, is a step closer to reclaiming the game that was briefly taken from him.

His absence was deeply felt. Without him, Gilas leaned heavily on June Mar Fajardo, Japeth Aguilar, and Carl Tamayo in the recent FIBA Asia Cup, where the Philippines settled for seventh place. The towering presence that Sotto brings—his shot-blocking, his mobility, his ability to stretch the floor—was missed as much as his youthful energy and passion.

Now, as the new B. League season looms this October, his return to the Koshigaya camp sparks fresh optimism. The Alphas know that a healthy Sotto can be a game-changer, while Filipino fans continue to look at him as a symbol of hope for the country’s basketball future.

At just 22 years old, Sotto is still writing the opening chapters of his career. The injury may have slowed him down, but it hasn’t stopped him. If anything, it has added more weight to his story—a reminder that greatness often comes not from avoiding adversity, but from overcoming it.

For now, the highlight isn’t a rim-rattling dunk or a monster block. It’s the sight of Kai Sotto lacing up again, chasing the game he loves, and inching his way toward redemption.
