Kai Sotto stays close to Gilas despite injury, joins team ahead of FIBA Asia Cup campaign

Though sidelined by injury, Kai Sotto continues to show unwavering support for the national team. The 7-foot-3 center was spotted courtside at the Araneta Coliseum on Monday night, watching Gilas Pilipinas’ tune-up game against the Macau Black Bears.

While the team rallied from a 21-point deficit to score a thrilling 103-98 win, Sotto could only watch from the sidelines — visibly frustrated, yet ever-present for his teammates. Despite his quiet demeanor during most of the game, Sotto took time during halftime to interact with fans, posing for selfies and exchanging smiles, even as the weight of not being able to suit up was evident.

Sotto has been out of action since January after suffering an ACL injury while playing for the Koshigaya Alphas in Japan’s B.League. Although there’s no clear timetable for his return, he remains optimistic about his recovery.

“I’m taking everything one step at a time. I’ll be back — stronger,” Sotto said briefly after the game.

In Sotto’s absence, AJ Edu stepped up for Gilas, delivering an all-around performance with 15 points. Kevin Quiambao also made his presence felt, contributing 14 points and grabbing five rebounds.

Despite not being part of the active roster, Sotto will travel with Gilas to Jeddah, Saudi Arabia on Thursday for the upcoming FIBA Asia Cup qualifiers. His presence is expected to provide a morale boost to the young squad as they prepare for one of the most important tournaments on their calendar.

Injury may have benched him for now, but for Kai Sotto, wearing the Gilas colors is more than just stepping on the court — it’s about being part of the journey, every step of the way.
