Justin Brownlee delivers another Gilas miracle in overtime thriller

Justin Brownlee celebrates after scoring during a basketball game, wearing a blue jersey with 'Pilipinas' and the number 32.

When the game is on the line, Justin Brownlee seems to have a personal rule: never let Gilas Pilipinas lose.

The 37-year-old naturalized star once again put on his superhero cape, leading the Philippines to a pulsating 95-88 overtime victory against Saudi Arabia to punch their ticket to the 31st FIBA Asia Cup quarterfinals.

Brownlee was ice-cold under pressure—scoring eight of Gilas’ final 10 points in regulation, capped by a dagger three-pointer that sent the packed King Abdullah Sports City into a frenzy and forced OT.

“These are the games you dream about and look forward to playing,” said Brownlee, who finished with a game-high 29 points, spearheading a furious comeback from a six-point deficit with just 93 seconds left. “I’m just happy we came away with the win and advanced in the tournament.”

It was a masterclass in redemption. Just days ago, Brownlee struggled against Iraq, managing only eight points. This time, he was a sniper—hitting 3-of-5 from deep and going 11-of-16 from the field.

But for Brownlee, heroics aren’t about luck—they’re about courage.
“As a player, when you see the opportunity, you have to go after it. You won’t always make every shot, but you have to have the guts to take them,” he said.

Still, he made sure credit was shared.
“I’m blessed to get those shots, but my teammates gave me the confidence to take them. They inspired me to make them.”

The win ends an eight-year drought, marking Gilas’ first Asia Cup quarterfinal appearance since 2017. But the celebration will be short-lived—the next challenge is monumental: reigning two-time champions Australia await on Wednesday.

If history has taught us anything, though, it’s that when the stakes are highest, Brownlee lives for these moments.
