Jericho Cruz becomes Guam’s emotional anchor as showdown with Gilas looms

Jericho Cruz has spent more than a decade battling Filipino basketball’s biggest stars—but this week, he becomes the very problem Gilas Pilipinas must solve.

When the Philippines opens its 2027 FIBA World Cup qualifying campaign against Guam on November 28 at the University of Guam Calvo Field House, the 35-year-old San Miguel guard will be on the opposite end of the floor for only one reason: he has become Guam’s heartbeat.

For Gilas coach Tim Cone, there is no mystery—and no underestimating—what Cruz brings.

“He’s a tough kid,” Cone said, acknowledging the edge Cruz injects into Guam’s roster. “He gives them real toughness, and we know that. We’re preparing for that.”

Cruz has been one of Guam’s pillars since joining the program in 2022. His grit and fearlessness helped fuel Guam’s breakthrough 82-73 victory over Syria in the last FIBA Asia Cup—a win that announced the island’s arrival on the Asian hoops map. In that run, he averaged 10.3 points, 2.3 rebounds, and 4.1 assists, but the numbers hardly capture the emotional weight he brings.

What makes this matchup even more intriguing is the familiarity. Cruz has spent years trading blows with Cone’s Barangay Ginebra squads in the PBA. Now, Cone must scheme against a player he knows all too well.

And for Cruz, the emotional stakes are higher. He will find himself staring down longtime San Miguel teammates June Mar Fajardo and CJ Perez—brothers on most days, opponents on this one. Cone expects the reunion to be fierce, but respectful.

“It’s an incredible challenge for him,” Cone said. “He’s going to get those guys in Guam ready.”

The tension won’t end in Guam. Gilas and Guam meet again on December 1 at the Blue Eagle Gym, where Cruz must once more confront the team and country he once battled with, not against.

For Gilas, Cruz is more than just a scouting assignment. He’s the emotional spark plug of a rising Guam team hungry for another upset. For Cruz, it’s a rare chance to go up against familiar faces—and prove that his toughness travels, no matter which jersey he wears.
